Learn about Google Translate in Coffee with a Googler

Over the past few months, we’ve been bringing you Coffee with a Googler, giving you a peek at people working on cool stuff that you might find inspirational and useful. Starting with this week’s episode, we’re going to accompany each video with a short post for more details, while also helping you make the most of the tech highlighted in the video.

This week we meet with MacDuff Hughes from the Google Translate team. Google Translate uses statistics based translation. By finding very large numbers of examples of translations from one language to another, it uses statistics to see how various phrases are treated, so it can make reasonable estimates at the correct phrases that are natural sounding in the target language. For common phrases, there are many candidate translations, so the engine converts them within the context of the passage that the phrase is in. Images can also be translated. When you point your mobile device at printed text and it will translate to the preferred for you.

Translate is adding languages all the time, and part of its mission is to serve languages that are less frequently used such as Gaelic, Welsh or Maori, in the same manner as the more commonly used ones, such as English, Spanish and French. To this end, Translate supports more than 90 languages. In the quest to constantly improve translation, the technology provides a way for the community to validate translations, and this is particularly used by less commonly used translations, effectively helping them to grow and thrive. It also enhances the machine translation by having people involved too.

Saving a life through technology Coffee with a Googler

In this week’s Coffee with a Googler, we’re joined by Heidi Dohse from the Google Cloud team to talk about how she saved her own life through technology. At Google she works on the Cloud Platform team that supports our genomics work, and has a passion for the future of the delivery of health care.

When she was a child, Heidi Dohse had an erratic heartbeat, but, without knowing anything about it, she just ignored it. As a teen she became a competitive windsurfer and skier, and as part of a surgery on her knee between seasons, she had an EKG and discovered that her heart was beating irregularly at 270bpm.

She had an experimental surgery and was immediately given a pacemaker, and became a young heart patient, expecting not to live much longer. Years later, Heidi is now on her 7th pacemaker, but it doesn’t stop her from staying active as an athlete. She’s a competitive cyclist, often racing hundreds of miles, and climbing tens of thousands of feet as she races.

At the core of all this is her use of technology. She has carefully managed her health by collecting and analyzing the data from her pacemaker. The data goes beyond just heartbeat, and includes things such as the gyroscope, oxygen utilization, muscle stimulation and electrical impulses, she can pro-actively manage her health.

It’s the future of health care -- instead of seeing a doctor for an EKG every few months, with this technology and other wearables, one can constantly check their health data, and know ahead of time if there would be any health issues. One can proactively ensure their health, and pre-empt any health issues.

That big, bold beauty pictured above is the HTC One Max. There have been more than a few leaks about this product. Why? Theres a lot to love - literally and figuratively. Lets start with a quick video introducing the product:

Battery life is the #1 thing consumers want to see improved, so if youre all about the long-lasting battery life, the HTC One Max is absolutely amazing. How amazing? Almost 55 hours of usage between charges. And this isnt putting it in power saving mode, turning things off constantly, etc. This is WiFi on, Bluetooth on, and GPS on during the daylight hours.


Part of what makes the battery life great is us using the Snapdragon 600 processor. The HTC One Max has the same screen resolution as the HTC One, which is a top performer, so the experience is the same on both devices, so while other devices in this category are shipping with the Snapdragon 800, its the day to day experience of using the device that matters more than the specs.
How does it compare, size-wise, to the HTC One and HTC One mini? A picture says it all:


Make no mistake, this is a big phone, but its amazing how quickly you can adapt to the larger size.

HTC ROM Update Utility RUU variants explanation

Owners of HTC devices might be a little confused when it comes to understanding the current method of numbering used by HTC to mark their software updates. Here you can find a short explanation of this matter.

First of all, we all know that HTC sells their devices all over the world. Every carrier and region of the world has some more or less different "local settings". By "local settings" I mean things like: emergency call numbers, languages, time-zone settings, network settings, carriers branding, GPS settings and more. Because of that each software for even the same device must be different.

Secondly, even the same device might use different hardware related to the region of the world. For example, HTC One is available in at least 6 different hardware configurations. One of the main difference is modem version. GSM version of the HTC One uses MDM8215 chip and LTE variant has MDM9215. Verizon (US) is known to have MDM9615. So thats already 3 different versions of the same device.

Every HTC update has the following numbering structure:

a.bb.ccc.d

a - the first number of the software. Normally it doesnt increase very often, but when it does, it usually means newer Android version.
bb - this number is also a software number. Increasing bb number means some more or less major update based on the same Android version, but sometimes it might even bring newer version of the HTC Sense.
ccc (also cc or cccc) - this is the number of the region/carrier. It has nothing to do with the software itself being newer or older. More details below.
d (sometimes dd) - the third part of the software version (the fourth one in the RUU name). Usually indicates some minor update with some hot fixes.


Example: 3.20.401.3

So basically, when you are interested in the software version, you should look at a.bb.d (3.20.ccc.3) because ccc (401) means only the region/carrier variant of the software.

The 401 and the 707 devices are usually the first ones that HTC prepare updates for. Carrier branded software is usually months after the WWE updates.

Finally, keep in mind that each software version is connected with the CID (Carrier ID) and MID (Model ID) of your device. That means you cant use whichever version you want, unless you have S-OFF on your device. Each ROM Update Utility.exe package will check your device details (bootloader version, MID and CID) before starting the update process.

HTC Sense 5 5 busted! True screenshots of the incoming HTC UI

Its been some time since we have had HTC Sense 5.0 on the market. In the past few weeks this, considered by many as the best Android UI, also has been released for HTC One X and HTC One X+.

We already know for a few months, that HTC has already been working on the next version of their famous UI - HTC Sense 5.5. Some of the Sense 5.5 features are already present in the latest HTC One Android 4.3 build, however they are currently disabled in the framework.

HTC One vs Apple iPhone 5s comparison part 1


The HTC One was released earlier this year a midst a fair amount of hype and anticipation. The handset has seemingly brought HTC back into the forefront of mobile technology, to the point where Robert Downey Jr. is now their marketing star. Apple has refreshed the iPhone with the 5s, and its popularity continues to rise year after year. Competition has grown substantially, with various manufacturers releasing great smartphones set to compete in every major market. So how has HTC continued to stand out against the crowd? With its build quality and gorgeous display.
HTC placed an emphasis on build quality, providing the same type of aluminium material found on the iPhone 5 and now the 5s. Without delving too deep into its multitude of features, below is a video comparison of the HTC One and Apple’s newest flagship, the iPhone 5s. How to Fix a corrupted DATA partition on the HTC One


Since the HTC One was released, Ive had a few users asking me to help them fix their broken device. They couldnt boot their system or access anything on the DATA partition from inside custom recovery. Why this happens so often on the HTC One I have no idea...

Here is a short guide explaining how to fix this problem without sending the device for repair under warranty.

Short Explanation

This method can be used to fix any other partition too, just remember about changing the mount point number - from "mmcblk0p37" to the relevant one. For example, the SYSTEM on the HTC One is "mmcblk0p35". In some rare cases the mkfs.ext4 attributes (like dir_nlink or resize_inode) might change too! To get a list of all eMMC mount points on HTC devices use the command cat /proc/emmc. Never format RAW partitions! This method can be used only to format EXT4 partitions. Not following the guide properly might end in permanent damage to your device. I do not take any responsibility for that.

Some people might also find this helpful in case of need to remove the entire contents of the virtual SD-card. As long as the virtual SD-card is not a separate partition, (i.e. it is emulated space on the DATA partition [/data/media]) it cant be formatted - only wiped clean. How Do I Recognise The Problem?

When trying to mount the DATA partition from inside the custom recovery using the mount /data command you will most likely see this output: mount: mounting /dev/block/mmcblk0p37 on /data failed: Invalid argument

To be 100% sure you can check filesystem structure with the following command: /sbin/e2fsck -n -f /dev/block/mmcblk0p37

Repair Process

Note: the content of your DATA partition will be lost, including the contents of your virtual SD-card! I also assume you already have custom recovery flashed and you are a Windows user - LINUX people please amend as needed.
  1. Download this mini-sdk package and extract it to c:mini-sdk
  2. Download this mkfs.ext4 binary and put it into c:mini-sdk
  3. Connect your device to the PC
  4. Boot your device in recovery mode
  5. Open a command prompt on the PC (cmd.exe), type and confirm each command with ENTER:
  6. cd /d c:mini-sdk
  7. adb push mkfs.ext4 /tmp
  8. adb shell
  9. chmod 777 /tmp/mkfs.ext4
  10. /tmp/mkfs.ext4 -b 4096 -O ^huge_file,^dir_nlink,^ext_attr,^resize_inode,^extra_isize -m 0 /dev/block/mmcblk0p37

Now your DATA partition will be formatted. It is not the same as "wiping", which is only removing all or just some files from particular partition. Formatting means that the entire partition will be re-created with the above attributes. You should see the following output:

This filesystem will be automatically checked every 25 mounts or 180 days, whichever comes first. 
Use tune2fs -c or -i to override.
Your DATA partition is now completely empty, so we need to copy our particular ROM zip file there:
  1. Copy ROM zip file to c:mini-sdk and rename it to "rom.zip"
  2. In the same command prompt window type and confirm each command with ENTER:
  3. mount /data
  4. mkdir -p /data/media/0
  5. exit
  6. adb push rom.zip /data/media/0
Copying rom.zip to the device will take a few minutes. Wait until its done. The output should be: xxxx KB/s (xxxxxxxxxx bytes in xxx.xxxs)Now you can flash rom.zip from inside custom recovery. Done!

Google announces a new Accelerator for mobile startups

Available to startups around the world, Google Launchpad offers resources, technology and expertise to help developers design, develop and distribute their apps. The Launchpad program includes a number of activities: Launchpad Week supports early-stage companies and focuses on high-impact mentorship, while Launchpad Day and Launchpad Summits similarly serves later-stage developers. So far, these events have been hosted in more than 30 countries and impacted more than 8,000 startups.

To complement all these efforts and provide a more intimate experience for developers, were expanding Launchpad to now also include the Launchpad Accelerator - a program that offers six months of hands-on support and training to help high-potential startups in India, Brazil and Indonesia build high quality apps and successful businesses. As part of the program, developers will be connected with Google professionals, world-class mentors and equity-free funding (up to $50,000 per startup) to help them quickly scale and reach their true potential.

The first wave kicks off on January 18th in Mountain View, CA, where over twenty pre-selected startups will coincide for two-weeks of intensive programming. Afterward, each company will return to their home country where mentorship will be ongoing, both locally and remotely, for the remaining time of the program. The startups will also receive credit for a range of Google services, as well as free co-working space. In the coming month, we’ll expand Launchpad Accelerator to more countries.

Samsung Chord SDK An Introduction

The Samsung Smart App challenge has motivated me to explore a bit more about the Samsung Chord SDK.

If you want to know more about the SamsungSmart App Challenge, please visit here  or to know more about the Android SDK – Here . There is a growing community for the android developer as well. 

Here is that I understand are the highlights of this SDK:
1.     It is a framework developed by Samsung for networking between devices – making it easy for people without network programming skills.
2.     It is not physical network connection that is created. It is application layer messaging protocol that uses the underlying TCP/IP network. i.e it is different from wi-fi or Bluetooth which work on a physical network protocol.
3.     Samsung also provides an add-in emulator to the standard eclipse development environment to test the networking of your apps.
4.     The Chord SDK allows creating a network of devices allowing for an n:n communication. It supports
a.     Synchronized content sharing
b.     Broadcast of messages to near by devices
c.      Data transfer between devices
d.     Multi-player games
5.     The Security features need improvement as any mobile with the same app on it can join the group or leave the group
6.      Chord supports only Android 4.0 and above


A bit about the architecture of the Chord SDK:

The application layer is where our imagination can be used to build innovative apps.

There are a few other basic aspects we need to understand in order to be able to use the Chord SDK.
1.     Channel Manager – This is the part of the software that manages all the mobiles in a network. The various devices are called nodes
2.     Messaging protocol – This is the part of the SDk that helps in exchanging of messages between the nodes
3.     File Transfer Protocol – This is the protocol used for file transfers between the nodes
4.     Discovery protocol -  This is the component that helps in discovering the various devices within range to for the logical group of nodes
5.     ZeroMQ – This is the underlying layer that helps with all the messaging and file transfers

A little bit more about Channels before we get into coding J

Chord has the concept of 2 types of channels for communication:
1.     Public Channel
2.     Private Channel

The Public channel is one one, which any device running the Chord SDk can join.
A private channel is one, which is created by nodes having the same chord SDK based application. 

So, if my mobile has Chord SDK app, I am part of a public channel. If I have an app A and an app B, I can be part of Channel A and Channel B respectively.
