HTC One won Gadget of the Year by T3

Since the release date, the HTC One has won almost every smartphone contest. Its won awards on many sites because of its unique design and great performance in conjunction with my favourite Android custom UI - HTC Sense. Now, months after the launch event in London, the HTC One has won yet another slew of awards - T3 Gadget of the Year, T3 Phone of the Year and finally T3 Design Award 2013! We are not hiding the fact that we are not surprised!
"The HTC One is a product designed to save a company in financial trouble – and it seems HTC’s design and engineering team work well with their backs against the wall.
This Android phone is the best product HTC has ever built, with a gorgeously thin, reassuringly rigid aluminium body bonded to the 4.7-inch screen by a technique that doesnt leave a single gap. And speaking of the screen, it’s eyeball-piercingly sharp, with a 1080p full HD resolution and Retina display-spanking pixel density of 468ppi. It’s one of a handful of phones that can be mentioned in the same breath as the iPhone when it comes to looks and build quality.
Performance is no less impressive, with the quad-core processor blazing through tasks with nary a trace of lag and the 4MP Ultrapixel camera serving up some of the finest snaps weve ever seen from a smartphone."

HTC One review part 1 Design

I used to think that we were in an era when all smartphones with big screens looked more or less the same. Because if youre honest, what can be changed in the front of the device, if 90 to 95% of its surface is just touch screen? Oh dear, I was so wrong. HTC One is a true masterpiece of art. However, this review will also show some weak points of the newest HTC premium device. Yes there are some shortcomings, but we are not living in an ideal world so you wont ever find a perfect product: it doesnt matter if its just a smartphone, a computer or even a car. People have different tastes or expectations and this wont ever change. But HTC One can surely satisfy more people then any other device before. Lets start from the beginning.

Size: 137.4 x 68.2 x 9.3mm

Weight: 143g

Display: 4.7 inch, Full HD 1080p, 468 PPI

Design

HTC put in a lot of effort to make this device look amazing - efforts which have been a great success. However, design was never a weak point of HTC devices. As far back as I remember, HTC devices were always one step ahead of the competition when it came to the design and form innovation. So for me, it is not a surprise that HTC One sets a new standard of build quality and design.

Gaps
However, some users are reporting a wide gap between its plastic and metal surfaces. I dont have any on mine, but as far as I know this problem is not a matter of just few devices. So right after you buy yours, make sure it doesnt have any gaps. Is it something that should stop you from buying HTC One? Surely not. It is normal in every production process that sometimes there are some manufacturing issues. On the other hand, it seems that HTC quality testing department is not working very well, if units with gaps are passing build flaw tests. HTC One is a premium device for a premium price, so as a customer, you have a right to expect a gap free product (especially since HTC advertised the device as "gap free"). If you have noticed any, go to the store where you bought your device and exchange it for a gap free unit.

Made from one piece of aluminium
HTC One is known to be made from aluminium with a unibody construction. You can have a silver model or a black one at the moment (more colours are rumoured to be on the way). I can tell you that both look amazing. The black device looks to be more solid, but silver gives you a better, more premium look and feel. Not much to discuss when it comes to colours, because its a matter of a taste of each user. If you want to read more about the process of designing the HTC One, you can visit this blog - Metal-morphosis of the New HTC One and this one - Making the New HTC One.

No removable battery - no problem
The unibody design has some particular consequences. First of all, you cant remove or change the battery inside the HTC One. Is it an issue? Personally, I never found it to be a problem. There are methods to switch off the device completely without removing the battery - a combination of power + volume buttons. Also, I shared my thoughts on this topic here - Removable battery - do we really need it? Its been a while already since the HTC One has been on the market and its a best-selling product, despite its non-removable battery. Does this mean a removable battery is not that important in the end?

Of course I understand some arguments against having a non-removable battery. But there are always two sides of an argument and Im not here to judge which side is better. Personally I just prefer unibody design, mostly because I see no reason to replace or remove the battery inside the device.

No micro-SD card - no problem either
It seems that no micro-SD card slot is also a consequence of having such a design. However, I can imagine that a micro-SD card could be used the same way as micro-SIM card is and it wont make it impossible to have a unibody design. On the other hand I also dont find any reasonable arguments to have a micro-SD card. The vast majority of users dont need more then 32 GB of available space. If you want to know more details about Android and internal memory you can read my article here - Virtual SD card on Android. HTC One is not supposed to be your personal media storage - for that you should buy a mini-PC with an mATX motherboard and 2x2TB HDDs connected with RAID. If the internal storage on your HTC One is full, backup some pictures or music onto your PC (or use USB OTG).

What to improve
Is there room for some improvements? Yes, I think there is. First of all, the design of the hardware buttons is not really comfortable. Having the power button on the top of such big device is not the best solution. Also, the power button itself is too small and it doesnt protrude enough from the surface, so its quite hard sometimes to press it. Maybe its because of the IR sensor built into the button that they were stuck with this design. I believe that having a power button located on the right hand side of the device (like on Nexus devices) and volume buttons on the left hand side would be a much better solution.

Secondly, the build of the front speaker grilles. These tiny holes can get clogged very easily. I cant think of an alternate solution at the moment; I guess its just the downside of having a smartphone with amazing sound capabilities, known as HTC BoomSound™.

The last biggest design flaw I found are capacitive buttons. There are just 2 buttons - home and back button. It is already confirmed that under the HTC logo there is a touch sensor as well, and with the new "logo2menu" feature available in most custom kernels for HTC One it is possible to assign the HTC logo as a menu button. I think that the trend to have fewer buttons on smartphones comes from Apple - but iOS is a completely different operating system with a much simpler UI, and its quite impossible to make the Android user experience that simple. Having just 2 capacitive buttons brings some negative consequences, for instance there is significant confusion about different "long-press" and "double-tap" combinations. For example, to activate the menu function you need to long press the Home button. To display "Recent Applications" you need to quickly tap twice on the Home button. Wouldnt it be easier for the end users to have 3 buttons instead of just 2, where one of them can be used in 3 different ways?

- 1 tap = home

- 2 tap = recent apps
- long tap = menu

Im writing this review using Android 4.2.2 on my HTC One. On Android 4.1.2 it was less complicated, but somehow worse, because without the possibility to assign a long tap on the home button as "menu", you would have to deal with an ugly black "action overflow" button at the bottom of the display, the result of application developers failing to implement the appropriate Android SDK (level 11 or higher). Such a button takes about 10% of the screen space and in some cases it does absolutely nothing. You can disable it by proper system modification (qemu.hw.mainkeys=1) but then you wouldnt be able to access the apps settings if the particular app doesnt support Android SDK level 11+. You can read more about Googles approach to the issue here - Say Goodbye to the Menu Button.

I believe that the perfect combination of capacitive buttons would be following:

- Back button
---> short press = back
---> long press = kill recent app

- Home button

- Menu button

---> short press = home
---> long press = recent apps

Shiny edges
Coming back to overall design, I forgot to mention that I really like the shining aluminium edges of the One. Its much more visible on the silver version, which is also known to be less susceptible to fingerprints. This is a really awesome effect, and there is no phone on the market that looks as good as the HTC One. Say no to plastic!

Heat dissipation
Apart from premium looks, the aluminium unibody brings one more very important feature. It works as a natural, huge radiator, taking out heat from inside your device. I can definitely tell that the HTC One is running much cooler than the HTC One X or One X+. The included "System on a Chip" is part of the reason, but the aluminium body helps a lot in dissipating any heat that does build up.

Camera
Camera housing is flat in HTC One, and its very good move from HTC. In HTC One X/X+ camera housing protrudes from the phone body and it was very easy to scratch it. It seems that HTC took seriously users feedback in that matter.

Verdict

There is a lot of marketing effort behind the HTC One, but this time its one of those rare occasions where advertising doesnt lie. The HTC One is a premium product, with unique and completely amazing design. If youre looking for a smartphone that will gain people attention on the street, the HTC One fits perfectly. But design is not all - it also has great hardware inside, but this is a material for part 2 of this review, coming in a few days!

PS. I want thank to Tom Kelsall, my HTC Elevate companion for his help in a proper grammar redaction of the review! Thanks Tom!

Design summarize:

+ overall design
+ aluminium unibody construction
+ it feels really great in the hand
+ available in two great looking colours
+ two sound grids for best multimedia experience

- gaps on some units
- only 2 capacitive buttons
- hardware buttons location

Introducing Google Actual Cloud Platform

(Cross-posted on the Google Cloud Platform Blog.)

At Google Cloud Platform, we strive to deliver innovative cloud computing technology to developers at low costs with massive scale. Currently, our cloud offerings are powered by best-in-class data centers, virtualization software and container-based applications, but as we consider the future of cloud computing, we realize there’s a major opportunity ahead that would allow us to deliver an unprecedented improvement in the power, efficiency and reliability of our infrastructure. We can elevate cloud computing like never before.

We’re answering the question that’s been in front of us the whole time: why isn’t cloud computing built in actual clouds? Well, as of today, it is. We’re excited to announce Google Actual Cloud Platform: all of our incredible services and products running in actual clouds in the troposphere.

Starting on April 1, Google Actual Cloud Platform brings with it a number of exciting new features:

  • New compute zone: We’ve added a new compute zone, troposphere-1a, to make it easier than ever to provide your app with non-earth-bound availability. Now, you no longer have to make a choice between high availability and high altitude.

  • New machine types: Alongside our current machine types, we’ve added a new category of “physical” devices: actual-cloud machine types. Choose from cumulus-16gb, cirrus-32gb and stratocumuliform-64g (created specifically for data intensive workloads).

  • Stormboost: Drawing on charges from electrical fields during thunderstorms, we’re able to supercharge read/write performance on all persistent disks and offer 50% higher IOPS.

  • CloudDrops: A new, game-changing content distribution system. CloudDrops can provide blazingly fast content delivery to all of your users using—you guessed it—rain drops.

  • Weather Dashboards in the Developer’s Console: With new weather-dependent performance features, you need a way to monitor the atmospheric conditions of your servers. Now, you can monitor humidity/request, watch your app’s altitude and see a 7-day forecast right next to the rest of your stats.

  • Bare-metal container support: Applications deployed on Actual Cloud Platform can run in containers too. The lightweight shared kernel model of containers makes them ideal for non-terrestrial deployments.

From all of us on the Google Cloud Platform team, here’s to clear skies ahead.

Locate Intel Hardware Accelerated Execution Manager HAXM for Microsoft Windows to update HAXM or change memory size

The Intel Hardware Accelerated Execution Manager (Intel® HAXM) is a hardware-assisted virtualization engine (hypervisor) that uses Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT) to speed up Android app emulation on a host machine. In combination with Android x86 emulator images provided by Intel and the official Android SDK Manager, HAXM allows for faster Android emulation on Intel VT enabled systems. ~ https://software.intel.com/en-us/android/articles/intel-hardware-accelerated-execution-manager

According to the document Installation Instructions for Intel® Hardware Accelerated Execution Manager - Microsoft Windows:

- The SDK Manager will download the installer to the "extras" directory, under the main SDK directory. Even though the SDK manager says "Installed" it actually means that the Intel HAXM executable was downloaded. You will still need to run the installer from the "extras" directory to get it installed.

- Run the installer inside the <sdk folder>/sdk/extras/intel/Hardware_Accelerated_Execution_Manager/ directory and follow the installation instructions for your platform.

Actually, you cannot find intel in C:Program Files (x86)Androidandroid-sdkextras folder.

it should be in C:UsersuserAppDataLocalAndroidsdkextrasintelHardware_Accelerated_Execution_Managerintelhaxm-android.exe

To locate it, run AVD (Android Virtual Device), it will be shown in Run box:

If you already have a old HASM installed, you want to update new version, or change memory size, you have to uninstall the old one firstly, in Windows Control Panel. Then run the C:UsersuserAppDataLocalAndroidsdkextrasintelHardware_Accelerated_Execution_Managerintelhaxm-android.exe again.

Open Google Maps from your iOS app

Originally posted on the Google Geo Developers Blog

If youre an iOS developer, youre probably aware that you have the ability to open some apps directly by taking advantage of their custom URL schemes. (And if youre not aware of that fact, I have an excellent set of videos to recommend to you!)

Of course, we wouldnt be telling you all of this on the Google Geo Developers blog if it werent for the fact that you can also use the comgooglemaps:// custom URL scheme to open up a map, Street View, or direction request directly in Google Maps on iOS.

Constructing these URLs, however, isnt always easy -- I dont know about you, but I dont spend a lot of my time memorizing key/value pairs for URL arguments. And adding x-callback-url support, while super useful for redirecting users back to your app, means adding even more URL arguments and escaping. And because not everybody has Google Maps installed on their iOS device, you may also want to build URLs to open up Apple Maps, which have their own similar-but-slightly different set of URL arguments.

It was one of those situations that made me say, "Hey, somebody should write a utility to make this easier." And thats how, a few months later, we ended up publishing the OpenInGoogleMapsController for iOS.

OpenInGoogleMapsController is a class that makes it easy to build links to open a map (or display Street View or directions) directly in Google Maps for iOS. Rather than creating URLs by hand, you can create map requests using Objective-C classes and types, so you can take advantage of all the type-checking and code hinting youve come to expect from Xcode.

For instance, if you needed biking directions from Sherlock Holmes apartment on Baker Street to Scotland Yard, your request might look something like this:

GoogleDirectionsDefinition *defn = [[GoogleDirectionsDefinition alloc] init];
defn.startingPoint =
[GoogleDirectionsWaypoint waypointWithQuery:@"221B Baker Street, London"];
defn.destinationPoint = [GoogleDirectionsWaypoint
waypointWithLocation:CLLocationCoordinate2DMake(51.498511, -0.133091)];
defn.travelMode = kGoogleMapsTravelModeBiking;
[[OpenInGoogleMapsController sharedInstance] openDirections:defn];

My favorite feature about this utility is that it supports a number of fallback strategies. If, for instance, you want to open up your map request in Google Maps, but then fallback to Apple Maps if the user doesnt have Google Maps installed, our library can do that for you. On the other hand, if its important that your map location uses Googles data set, you can open up the map request in Google Maps in Safari or Chrome as a fallback strategy. And, of course, it fully supports the x-callback-url standard, so you can make sure Google Maps (or Google Chrome) has a button that points back to your app.

Sound interesting? Give it a try. Just add a couple of files to your Xcode project, and youre ready to go. Feel free to add issues or enhancements requests you might encounter in the GitHub repository, and let us know if you use it in your app. Wed be excited to check it out.

HTC One M8 3 28 401 6 new firmware details

While the new OTA update for the HTC One M8 is still hot & fresh (HTC One M8 received Android 4.4.4 update with HTC EYE camera experience!) we decided to take a quick look at the new firmware package included in the 3.28.401.6 update. There are few interesting changes in there!

1. Bootloader (hboot)

The new bootloader version is tagged as 3.19.0.0000 (previously 3.18.0.0000) and one of the most noticeable changes is the new "Software status" text at the very top of the screen in the bootloader mode. There are 2 possible variants of this text:

*** Software status: Modified ***

and

*** Software status: Official ***

This new text apparently replaced the existing until now "TAMPERED" text (or some may call it "flag"). When the "Official" will change to "Modified"? It seems that there are 3 commons situations: flashing custom recovery.img, boot.img (both with no HTC digital signature) or modifying anything on the system partition.
  • How often that component receives an update? Very often
2. ADSP drivers (Advanced Digital Signal Processor)

The OpenDSP version is now 46.2.2-00564-M8974_F0.0811 and it previously was tagged as 38.2.2-00542-M8974.0311. The Harman & Kardon ADSP drivers were tagged as 45.2.2-00542-M8974_HM.0422 so maybe HTC incorporated proper H&K code changes in the international HTC One M8 as well? Audio and video improvements expected!
  • How often that component receives an update? Rarely
3. Boot.img

New boot.img has a few changes in the ramdisk and a new kernel (3.4.0-g222defb) inside.
  • How often that component receives an update? With every update
4. Emmc_fw16.img and emmc_fw32.img

These are totally new. We can only guess that emmc_fw.16/32.img are suppose to update the eMMC (embedded Multi-Media Controller) storage firmware.
  • How often that component receives an update? Never before
5. Radio.img

The new radio in the 3.28.401.6 firmware is tagged as 1.21.21331147A1.19_2G and it replaced the 1.19.21331147A1.09G version.
  • How often that component receives an update? Rarely
6. Recovery.img

As always, recovery images has also been updated (f.g. with a new kernel). Not many use stock recovery anyway.
  • How often that component receives an update? With every update
7. Rpm.img

This component is responsible for a chipset firmware, voltage tables, etc.. Its one of the most crucial firmware parts.
  • How often that component receives an update? Almost never
8. Sbl1-1, sbl1-2, sbl1-3 and sbl1-4

These are probably related to the bootloader security mechanisms. Sbl1-1, sbl1-2, sbl1-3 are updated in the 3.28.401.6 OTA package and sbl1-4 is a brend new one.
  • How often that component receives an update? Almost never
9. Sensor_hub.img

The sensor_hub.img is the firmware for the sensor hub. A sensor hub is in itself a chip with its own LowPower microprocessor that can control the sensors in the device.
  • How often that component receives an update? Almost never
10. Splash1.nb0

This is a splash-screen animation that appears right before you see the regular boot-animation.
  • How often that component receives an update? Almost never
11. Tz.img

Tz.img is responsible for so called Trusted Zone: DRM keys at stuff. Its another crucial firmware part, better not to play with!
  • How often that component receives an update? Rarely
12. wcnss.img

Also known as Wireless CoNnectivity SubSystem (thanks to tonokeemon @XDA for the info!). Its responsible for a Wi-Fi module firmware. Better dont mess with it!
  • How often that component receives an update? Almost never

As you can see, the 3.28.401.6 update is not only based on Android 4.4.3 --> Android 4.4.4 change. It contains a fundamental changes in the device firmware too. Android Revolution HD 20.0 based on the latest 3.28.401.6 update is just about to be released. In a couple of hours you will be able to find the download link in my XDA thread or alternatively on the AndroidNow English board thread, where I keep all links to my custom ROMs.

How to Manually install an OTA update on your HTC device

Sometimes it turns out that your device for some reason cant find the most recent OTA (Over The Air) update. However, there is a solution to apply OTA update manually, without being forced to wait for the update being downloaded and installed by your device.

Facts you need to know before continuing:
  1. This method has nothing to do with the "adb sideload" feature available on Android devices since Jelly Bean. It should work on every Android HTC device.
  2. Read about different software versions for the HTC devices here. Keep in mind that the OTA update must match the software version on your device. Each original OTA update.zip package has 2 different software versions in its name - the version of the software that must be currently installed on your device and the version of the software that your device will run after the update. For example:
OTA_M7_UL_JB43_SENSE55_MR_HTC_Europe_3.62.401.1-2.24.401.8_release_338160gxmo5sd9337kadux.zip

As you can see, 2.24.401.8 is the software version you must currently have installed to be able to run the OTA and 3.62.401.1 is the version of the software expected after the update. You cant flash an OTA update on a different software version to that expected by the OTA update for two main reasons:
  1. Formal reason - the OTA update.zip package checks if your system is running the expected software version before it starts to install the update:
    assert(file_getprop("/system/build.prop", "ro.build.fingerprint") == "htc/htc_europe/m7:4.2.2/JDQ39/235216.8:user/release-keys");
    This must match the following build fingerprint from the build.prop. If the versions dont match, the installation of the OTA package will be cancelled.
    ro.build.fingerprint=htc/htc_europe/m7:4.2.2/JDQ39/235216.8:user/release-keys
  2. Technical reason - OTA update.zip packages usually contain patches for the target files. This way OTA update doesnt have to be 1GB size, even if it is supposed to update the whole OS to the newer version. Patch files have an *.apk.p extension (f.g. Camera.apk.p) and each patch file must match the target file (f.g. Camera.apk). To make it possible, OTA update.zip package checks the MD5 checksum of each file on the system partition on your device:
    assert(apply_patch_check("/system/app/Camera.apk",
    "b3b79e40bad0b1bec5fb949ac5f8662f91bee714",
    "5a5bf63e3d7c9de52a7d8d7a292e158263783844"));
    And finally, if the MD5 is correct it applies the patch. All these commands are stored in META-INFcomgoogleandroidupdater-script of each OTA update.zip package. If the MD5 is incorrect, or at least one file is missing, the installation of the OTA package will be cancelled.
    assert(apply_patch("/system/app/Camera.apk", "-",
    b3b79e40bad0b1bec5fb949ac5f8662f91bee714, 4229394,
    5a5bf63e3d7c9de52a7d8d7a292e158263783844,
    package_extract_file("patch/system/app/Camera.apk.p")));

Now you are ready to manually apply the OTA update on your device. The methods youll use is based on Android stock recovery.

Method 1 (for users with root access)
  1. Make sure you have the stock (original) recovery on your device
  2. Make sure youre running a completely unmodified operating system. Additional files like Superuser.apk or su binary are allowed, you just cant have any system files changed or removed (due to the MD5 check)
  3. Make sure you have a reasonable amount of battery charge remaining
  4. Make sure the OTA update youre about to install matches the software version on your device
  5. Copy the OTA update.zip package to the internal storage /data/media/0/update.zip
  6. Open adb shell or use Android Terminal Emulator and type: echo "--update_package=/data/media/0/update.zip" > /cache/recovery/command
  7. Turn OFF the device (make sure fastboot mode is disabled in settings)
  8. Hold your volume down and power keys until the bootloader starts up
  9. Using the volume keys, navigate down to RECOVERY and press power
  10. The OTA update installation process should now start automatically
  11. Once system is booted you should see a confirmation about the successfully flashed update.
Method 2 (for users without root access) | This method wont work on the S-ON HTC One M8
  5. Copy the OTA update.zip package to your device (internal storage preferred)
  6. Turn OFF the device (make sure fastboot mode is disabled in settings)
  7. Hold your volume down and power keys until the bootloader starts up
  8. Using the volume keys, navigate down to RECOVERY and press power
  9. You are now in stock recovery mode. You should see nothing more than a (sometimes spinning) Android with the red exclamation mark above it (an empty black screen is also possible). Wait for a few seconds
  10. First hold volume up, then (with volume up held down) press power button to enter the main recovery menu. This keys combination may vary from device to device. Try different keys combination if the above one doesnt work (might be all three keys all together too)
  11. Navigate down to "apply from phone storage" text and press power to confirm
  12. Navigate to the location where you copied the OTA update.zip package and press power to confirm
  13. Wait (sometimes you might need to follow further instructions on the screen) until the update process is finished
  14. Once system is booted you should see a confirmation about the successfully flashed update.
