Stock system dumps for HTC One HTC One X

Last two days were very exciting for HTC community, especially for HTC One X users (Android 4.2.2 with HTC Sense 5.0 update described here). However, there is always one problem when it comes to HTC updates - no RUUs (ROM Update Utility) officially available do download for regular users (HTC One Developer Edition and Google Edition seems to be the only exceptions). Why RUU is that important to us?

These executable (.exe) files for MS Windows are installers of complete firmware, including for example system or data partitions. Not having latest RUU means:
  1. users using custom ROMs cant download latest OTA from HTC,
  2. developers have no system dumps they can work with.
Ad. 1) If you want to download and flash latest OTA, your device must have completely stock system partition and recovery. Every OTA update is checking MD5 of each file on system partition to ensure .apk patch can be applied. If even one of 1000 files wont match, OTA update installation will fail. In this case you need to flash the latest official update you can find (even one year old) and later download official OTA updates.

Ad. 2) There are few workarounds, however none of them is as good as having a RUU:
  • adb pull /system in custom recovery mode*
  • cp /system /data/media/dump in custom recovery mode*
  • nandroid backup
  • boot partition can be taken from inside firmware.zip inside OTA .zip package or it can be dumped using dd if=</path/to/boot/partition> of=/data/media/boot.img
* adb pull, cp or dd commands must be executed from custom recovery mode, otherwise system dump will be missing few important files or these files will have 0kb size. Also, keep in mind that adb features are heavily limited on stock un-rooted device. In case of dd command, root access (su) is needed to make such operation.

Thats why I created my own stock system dumps (as a custom recovery .zip packages) for both HTC One and HTC One X. I believe this can save a lot of time for many XDA users and developers.

Stock system dumps Android 4 3 with HTC Sense 5 5 for HTC One

Very important update is out since yesterday for HTC One user. Android Revolution HD 30.0 - the world first custom ROM based on Android 4.3 & HTC Sense 5.5 for HTC One is available for download on XDA-Developers thread. However, there is always one problem when it comes to HTC updates - no RUUs (ROM Update Utility) officially available for download for regular users (HTC One Developer Edition and Google Edition seems to be the only exceptions). Why RUU is that important to us? I already made a short explanation here, but lets remind that again.

RUU (.exe) files for MS Windows are installers of complete firmware, including for example system or data partitions. Not having latest RUU means:

Android 5.0 "Lollipop" has been unveiled on June 25, 2014 and it’s the latest version of the Android mobile operating system developed by Google. Only few months later the HTC One M7 - the best smartphone of the 2013 and the HTC One M8 - the best smartphone of the 2014 are already running Android Lollipop together with the most powerful Android custom UI - HTC Sense 6.0.

Android 4 3 for HTC One now available for everyone

As previously promised here, the new Android Revolution HD based on Android 4.3 and HTC Sense 5.0 is ready for everyone to download.

HTC hasnt released yet the international (WWE) update for HTC One, so users with international version of HTC One (M7_UL) are still waiting for Android 4.3 to come. As a workaround, Android Revolution HD is based on recently released Android 4.3 OTA for HTC One "Developer Edition". By checking byte to byte its quite easy to notice that the software from international edition (401) and developer edition (1540) are almost the same. So instead of waiting for WWE OTA, Android Revolution HD 22.0 has been "WWE-ed", which means it works identically to WWE software. All WWE languages are included.

So, if you dont want to wait for WWE OTA update for your HTC One, please visit this thread and get the latest Android Revolution HD 22.0 with Android 4.3 and HTC Sense 5.0.

HTC One with KitKat and HTC Sense 5 5 is finally out!

Android 4.4 KitKat with HTC Sense 5.5 is now available for the HTC One. This is a must-have update for all HTC One owners.

Sounds great? Well, you might not be happy after all. So far the update is available only for the owners of the Developer Edition of the HTC One. But there is a good news too - you can have KitKat update on your "regular" HTC One too, without waiting for the official update (which might take few more weeks).

To make it possible, Android Revolution HD has been updated to 40.x series, based on the official Android 4.4 KitKat & HTC Sense 5.5 update (4.06.1540.2).

Why KitKat update is that important? It has several very important changes:
  1. Vastly improved security
  2. Smarter "Location" settings
  3. Better performance
  4. Improved battery consumption
  5. Faster multitasking
  6. Better Google Hangouts integration
  7. ...and much more!
Here are some screenshots. You can see the new Location settings panel.

Users feedback so far leaves no doubts - this update brings significant performance improvements. Some users are even reporting, that Android 4.4 with HTC Sense 5.5 gives better performance experience than pure KitKat update for the HTC One Google Edition which we wrote about here. I think this is enough said. Dont stay on your old 4.3 OS and grab newest 4.4 update as soon as possible!

USB SYSTEM LOCK

BOOT LOCK

This lock will allow you to use your USB stick as a key to boot into windows. If someone tries to start the computer without your USB stick, it will display boot errors. Before we begin let us tell you that playing with the BIOS and files of your computer may result in you not being able to boot into your partition;so continue at your own risk!
Now that we have absolved ourselves of all guilty, lets begin.
Things you need:A 64MB or larger sized USB stick, windows recovery disk.(Just in case)
Steps:
1) Unhide hidden and protected files: goto Tools>options>view, check show hidden files and unchecked hide protected system files.

2)From the driver where Windows is installed(normally C:), copy the files boot.ini, ntdlr and NTDETECT.COM to your USB Stick.

3)Now,we need to go into your BIOS,so restart the computer and keep jabbing[F8] as soon as the computer starts.

4)Once in the BIOS,enable USB Drive as the first boot device. You might have to enable USB Legacy support on older BIOSes.

5)Restart your computer if all goes well you should be able to lg into windows. If not, then unplug the USB stick, return to the BIOS and change the first Boot device to your hard disk and repeat the steps above.

6)Once your are logged into Windows drive and rename boot.ini to boot.bak.

7)To check if you have setup everything correctly, eject your USB stick and reboot the computer. You should get error messages on the screen such as "Invalid Boot.ini" or "Windows could not start".

8)In case Windows does not load, use yours windows recovery disk by following the steps mentioned at http://tinyurl.com/s9sd2.

The other way

For the less brave-hearted,  instead of preventing Windows from booting you can choose to just lock your computer with your USB stick.

USB system Lock

A freeware program,USB system lock Works flawlessly while locking and unlocking your computer. When you install USB System Lock, it detects your USB stick  and creates a digital key on it.This key is used by the program to authenticate the user and log into the computer.
Strangely, the program is not included in the start-up list by default.
to add it there, you need it to drag agent from the USB system lock entry under all programs to the start up folder in the same menu.If you happen to accidentally delete the key from your USB stick while working on the protected computer you can reassign a key using start>programs>USB system lock>Key Disk Generator.

My Lock 2.0

This program takes USB-based computer locking to whole new level. You can look access to not only your PC but the keyboard,CD Drive and even access to safe mode. You can also set a particular time for the computer to automatically lock itself. What is most interesting about the phrase so that you can use it log into the computer even without the stick plugged in
