HTC One variants update

In my article here I was writing about HTC One GSM/LTE (UL) and GSM (U) versions. The question if ROM based on UL firmware can be flashed on U device is still valid, but now we have some more details about these variants.
It turns out, that UL version of HTC One (having both GSM & LTE radio) will be available mostly in the Europe and North America. Model ID (MID) of this version is PN0710000.

U version (GSM radio only) is going mostly to Asian markets. Model ID (MID) of this version is PN0711000. There is also WL variant, which will be the Sprint version of HTC One. I dont know MID number of this version yet.

In the past we had similar situation with slightly different MIDs numbers of the same device. HTC Sensation had PG5813000 and Sensation XE had PG5813001. Both devices can use the same custom ROMs. HTC Desire HD has PD9810000, while Telus variant had PD9814000 and HTC Inspire 4G (U.S. version of HTC Desire HD) had PD9812000. Again, one custom ROM can be flashed on all 3 devices.
There are also some more details that leads to the conclusion, that most probably users with HTC One variant will be able to use their device with no issues after flashing custom ROM based on UL RUU. This is surely a very good news for both users and custom ROM developers. However, this will probably not enable LTE modem on U devices. So if you want to use LTE and your carrier supports this technology, make sure you will buy HTC One UL.

My fight with Samsung part 1


It is a common knowledge that the theory is one thing and the practice is sometimes completely different. Today Ive felt on my own skin how Samsung is trying to fool its customers. Keep on reading and please share this on any of your social network.

Some time ago I bought a Samsung tablet – Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition). Few days ago I realized that the S-Pen stylus is no longer working. The touch screen simply didnt react when I was trying to write anything on the front panel. So I took the device to the authorized Samsung service in Krakow - "W&K Wlodarski ?ukasz". 

How much I was surprised when I received a text message after 20 minutes that my device is ready to be picked up. When I came back I was told that the warranty is voided because of "unauthorized software integration". Lets now point out some important technical details.
  1. In ODIN mode: CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
  2. In ODIN mode: SYSTEM STATUS: Official
  3. Current OS: official P605XXUCNF2
  4. Kernel: official
  5. Recovery: official
  6. ROOTED: no!
So... what the f... hell? Where is the "unauthorized software integration"?

I asked the technician for some more details. He wasnt able to answer any of my questions. He wasnt able to show me this "software integration" and what would that be.

Lets now focus on the legal part. Warranty terms attached to my device do state about software modifications, but its a crucial ability to read it with understanding and a proper interpretation.


    What does it mean? The key word in this part is "due to". So basically, there has to be a causal link (a cause ---> effect relationship). So if the modified software caused the failure, the warranty does not cover it. But if the modified software has no relation with the failure, then YOU MUST FIX IT, DEAR SAMSUNG!

    The other very important thing is the burden of proof. The burden of proof is the imperative on a party in a trial to produce the evidence that will shift the conclusion away from the default position to ones own position. In simply words that means: if you say something - prove it! It is not MY obligation to prove that I havent modified the software. If you, dear Samsung claim that my warranty is voided because of software modification, you need to prove this software modification.

    To sum up this first part:
    1. Samsung service didnt prove their statement that I made an unauthorized software integration.
    2. Samsung service didnt demonstrate a causal relationship between the unauthorized software integration (if there was one) and the device failure.
    3. Samsung service refused to fix my device and the worker said "Sir you have no chance, just give up and leave".
    Few minutes ago I wrote a long e-mail to Samsung support centre, explaining the whole situation. What comes next? Lets wait for a part two...

    Exploring the Samsung Mobile SDK

      
     As I worked with the Samsung Chord SDK, I came to realise that the Samsung Mobile SDK is an ecosystem in itself for an Android App Developer, with many new add-ons in the true spirit of extending the features of Android SDK in a powerful way.

    One such package that is part of the Samsung Mobile SDK is the Pen package. In fact, Samsung has thrown open a new Samsung SmartApp Challenge currently targeting the new devices released by Samsung recently.

     The Challenge (Android Contest) is open from September 5th to November 30th with the judgement being pronounced in late February 2014. More details are available on the Samsung Developers site.(developer.samsung.com)

    It is targeting the usage of Pen package and Look package of the Samsung Mobile SDK on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and their tablet Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) both of which have been just released!! Wow, this seems like a smart move J Getting the strong Android Developer Community to rally around for the Challenge with their flagship SDK.

    The new devices themselves have a lot to offer over the predecessors. It would be essential to understand what is provided as pre-packaged features in these phones before we can understand what the Pen package and Look package have to offer for Android Developers.  

    In this post let us see what these devices have to offer with the said packages before I talk about the packages themselves.

    The features offered by the usage of S Pen in Note 3 seems to be significantly more and hence gives more options for an app developer. And as I see and hear more about the Note 3, it certainly seems to be a class-leading tablet going to take the mobile market by storm.
     One of the important new features on the Note 3 using S Pen is the “Air Command” feature. If you just hover over the screen and press the screen once with the S Pen (pressing the S Pen button), the Air Command window pops up. And from the Air command window – you have access to the following features:

    1. Action Memo
    2. Scrapbook
    3. Screen Write
    4. S Finder
    5. Pen Window
    The Air Command window looks like this:


    Action Memo lets you handwrite a note. It just does not stop there, though!!  This is nothing new, you may say. Even in the 90s there were devices that capture notes written with a stylus! 

    But this goes a step beyond and builds intelligence out of what you have written. For e.g. if you jot down a phone number, you can easily save it to you contacts without keying it in again!  If you jot down a valid address, it lets you navigate to Google maps directly to that address! How cool can it get?!! You can do many things like, call a phone number directly from the scribbled number, email to a scribbled email id, send instant text messages, add to a task list etc.

    Scrapbook lets you circle content and not just grab a screen shot but actually fetch the content and save it automatically for easy browsing later. This includes even grabbing YouTube content!!

    Screen Write captures a screen image and allows you to write comments on an image.

    S Finder is the phone’s search engine providing a system-wide search.  It really is very handy in searching the content on the entire phone including chat messages, scrapbook etc.

    Pen Window seems to be THE feature that is starting off a new trend in working with multiple windows of varying sizes and allowing for easy interaction between them. It gives your access to eight apps by drawing a box of any size on the screen! It may open up for more apps soon – a window of opportunity there.

    The same is available on the Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) tablet as well with a few additional features.

    The Look package grows on the basics provided by the Pen Package.  The Look package provides specialized widgets in the Android View System.

    Stream mobile contents to your TV using new Samsung Android App

    Yes, finally Samsung made it real. You can watch your videos recorded in your Android phone on your TV! The reverse is also possible, you can watch TV programs on your mobile, also you can use your phone as a remote control. Play your favorite games on your TV, control the game using your phone!

    This feature is available only in Samsung Galaxy S II, but will be enabled on other Samsung smart phones soon including Samsung Galaxy Tab.

    Setting up the Samsung Chord SDK

    Continuing from the previous posts, I would like to write about setting up the development environment for using the Chord Android SDK and give an overview of the main classes to be used for your first program (to come in a later article).

    This is towards aiding android developers in writing apps for the Samsung Android Contest.

    1. Download the Samsung Chord SDK available here
    2. Download the Samsung Chord SDK emulator also available here (need to accept the license agreement in order to download both)
    3. Add the Eclipse plugin for Chord SDK as described in "Chord SDK Emulator Guide ver1.2".
    4.    You can download sample apps from the chord sdk link and run it on the emulator.
    5. The screen shot shows the basic interface of the sample demo. Of course, this can meaning fully execute only after you start the Chord Relay server in the eclipse environment which shows the console and how the UDP broadcast is happening from the emulator. This allows you to do basic stuff like Starting Chord, Joining and leaving a channel.


    While the above shows the basics in terms of getting up the first Samsung chord SDK app to work, we need to understand what the Android SDK gives us and what are the classes we have to use to create our own app.

    What are the basic classes and interfaces provided by the Chord Android SDK? All of the fundamental ones are described here:

    ChordManager– This forms the core of the SDK. This is used to create a Node and helps in managing which nodes are connected to which channels. If you want to know more about channels and nodes, please refer the previous article.

    This is the class that hides all the network complexity from the developer. These are the basic features provided by this class:
    1. Tells you the list of available network interfaces like wi-fi or Mobile Access Point etc.
    2.  It gives you an option to start and stop chord
    3.  It gives you an option to leave or join a channel
    4.  Helps you list all the channels the node has joined
    5. And also provides a way to hook up a network listener to respond to changes in the network status.


    Most of the main service or game or whatever your application is aiming to achieve through node interactions should be through using the Chord Manager. However, your app – the game or service will also have to provide implementation for 3 listeners:

    1. INetworkListener-  ChordManagerhas to listen on this listener to understand the changes in the network state – whether connected or disconnected to the network (of choice – wifi, wifi direct etc.)
    2.  IChordChannelListener– It is through this listener you will have to implement all actions that need to happen when a node joins the network or leaves a network.  Through this you also need to implement what happens when a file/data is received or sent.
    3. IChordManagerListener– is a listener that needs to be implemented when you start your ChordManager. This is required to handle the changes when a ChordManagerstarts. Also, after starting, the ChordManager, if there is an error or a network disconnect, what should the ChordManagerdo – is defined in the implementation of this listener.

    The above 4 classes/listeners help in implementing your own service that can be used with all your nodes in the network.

    However, while you have the entire above service ready, you need to decide which channels are you interested in interacting with?  It could be the public channel or a private channel with a specific name or even many at a time.

    The specific channel implementations are those classes that a developer needs to develop by implementing the IChordChannelInterface.

    The interface provides the methods for sending and receiving data.

    So, in summary, you have the crux of what you really want to do in your own implementation of the IChordChannel.

    However, the ChordManagerhelps you manage connecting and communicating with various nodes in the private or public channels by using 3 listeners.

    It is as simple as that. Hope this clarifies the Samsung Chord SDK a bit in order for you to be able to take part in the Samsung Smart App Challenge.

    HTC One GSM or LTE



    HTC One is a new flagship device from HTC for 2013. With no doubts it is a great device with top hardware and innovating software. I will make a review of One soon, so expect a lot of pictures and in-depth comparison of HTC Sense 4+ and brand new HTC Sense 5.

    For now some of you might be wondering about possible variants of this device. I made some research and I think I know how would this work. It is not officially confirmed, however I believe it is quite reliable and trustworthy.
    Apart of all carriers branded models (also U.S. AT&T, U.S. Verizon and U.S. Sprint), there will be GSM  and GSM + LTE variants available for most countries. Respectively M7_U for GSM and M7_UL for LTE. Now the question is - when new update will come for U, will it come for UL the same day, or maybe week later? I cant answer that, but I hope both variants will be updated at the same time.
    First off all, looking at HTC One software, its easy to spot that both U and UL variants have the same code-name "m7". Model ID (MID) will be probably slightly different. LTE variant has PN0710000, while GSM should have something like PN0711000 or PN0710001. The beginning of the code will be the same for all One variants - PN07.

    Now, lets assume we speak about European version (to avoid confusion with different CIDs or MIDs). It is said that Snapdragon 600 (HTC One SoC) has LTE modem already integrated (just like S4 and S4 Pro). So logically, there shouldnt be 2 different variants of S600 (with or without LTE). And so I believe that. This means that GSM variant of HTC One will have LTE modem as well, but most probably it will be disabled. Is it possible to disable LTE modem? Sure. The fact that specific SoC has LTE modem doesnt mean its activated.

    Will it be possible to activate LTE radio in GSM model? Im not sure yet, but I think it would. How? Youll need S-OFF device, thats obvious. Since both GSM and LTE models will have the same hardware, having S-OFF you should be able to flash M7_UL software (RUU.exe). Of course youll have to modify your Model ID (MID) in fastboot before (fastboot oem writemid PN0710000). Is there a risk to totally brick your device? Yes! So dont try it before it is confirmed to be working.

    To find any official confirmation of my research I visited Qualcomm site and went to the specification page of new Snapdragons 200, 400, 600 and 800 chipsets. Here is the picture of S600 features:

    As you can see, LTE modem is indeed integrated, and so will be present in GSM models as well. Here I repeat again - it will be disabled on GSM units and it wont be possible to switch it on/off in settings just like that. Enabling LTE on such units will be either not possible at all, or it will be possible by flashing M7_UL RUU to S-OFF device. Why this does not apply to HTC One X and its LTE brother, HTC One XL? Because One X is based on quad-core nVidia Tegra 3, while One XL is powered by dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4. Yes, both are running different SoCs, because Tegra 3 doesnt have LTE modem integrated.

    How to recognize if HTC One is GSM or LTE version? Looking back at some HTC devices like HTC One SV (C525u) you could noticed "4G LTE" text on the back cover. I wouldnt expect similar text this time, because the back case is not removable.
